THE CAROB MILL, EPIMENIDES AND THE CAROB OF CRETE
The restoration of the abandoned carob mill started as an initial idea in 1996 out of the need to create a space for Art and Culture. The Cultural Society of Panormos “Epimenides” was founded In 1998 and is up to now responsible for its management. We started organizing important artistic and cultural events, from the very first moment, even as a ruin.
In the process until today, excellent artists and scientists have stood by our side, believing, as we do, in the idea that the creation of an Art and Cultural Centre in a small village is valuable because it enhances the quality of life, brings different people together and through a common experience is a beacon, as a counterweight to the very hard everyday life of the people.
Nothing can be achieved without a group of people who share a common vision for the future.
With the vehicle of the Carob Mill, in addition to art, we share a common vision of the humble carob that offers us a priceless cultural value. A value intertwined with its contribution to saving the population during the 2nd World War, its nutritional richness, its impact on the natural and socio-economic environment.
Inspired by the carob mill, the mechanical equipment we have preserved, and its historical value which connects us with the memories of its operation, we have taken initiatives to meet with growers, researchers, scientists, producers, and people related to carob, with the aim of reviving and extending its use in modern gastronomy.
We started a series of workshops and conferences, culminating in the “1st International Mediterranean Scientific Conference” on the “Coming back of Carob” in April 2019. This conference was attended by researchers and institutions from Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, and Egypt.
We started a series of workshops and conferences culminating in the “1st International Mediterranean Scientific Conference” for the “Renaissance of Carob Cultivation” in April 2019. This conference was attended by researchers and organizations from Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Cyprus.
Our efforts were rewarded and the proposal on “The agro-food tradition of carob in Crete” was inscribed in the national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. We hope that it will also be included in the international list of UNESCO. Among our goals is the creation of a Carob Museum in the Carob Mill, which we want to become a reference point for the carobs in the Mediterranean.
